Polaire is a sans-serif stencil italic typeface based on a calligraphic skeleton. It’s a monoline display type with atypically placed stencil gaps. They have been applied in a way to implement rhythm and to highlight the writing movement.

It all started during the last winter season. Because sign painting is part of my job, I received the request to decorate Christmas shop windows. I wanted to achieve a real snowy effect lettering, so I came with the idea to swap the paint with spray and to design a custom stencil type for this purpose.

The next step was to find a proper medium, which would be relatively resistant but also easy to cut. The first object which drew my attention was a plastic dining table mat. Cheap and easy to find anywhere.

After a few uses of my template, I figured out that to have only 1 stencil gap for letters with counter (in my case letter "d") is not enough! Those letters can be too fragile and the paint can leak under the template while spraying... So because the outcome did not meet my expectations I had to add at least one more stencil gap. All those adjustments were already done in my digital font file. This way I was able to put in perspective the old and new version thus allowing me to control the rhythm and consistency among all gaps as well.

I decided to turn my lettering into a font, because I believe that this typeface will be suitable in printing media for headlines, branding and editorial design too.
